THE FINAL QUARTER: It’s Not How You Started, It’s How You Finish

Reflect on the Journey. Refocus Your Priorities. Finish the Year with Intention.

October has arrived, and suddenly we’re looking at the final three months of the year. It seems like only yesterday we were welcoming 2026, setting goals, making resolutions, and imagining all the wonderful things we hoped to accomplish.

Now we’re entering the fourth quarter, and the question is no longer just what we planned to do this year. It’s what we’ve actually done, what we’ve learned along the way, and how we want to finish.

For some, this has been a remarkable year filled with accomplishments, answered prayers, new opportunities, and personal growth. For others, it has been a difficult journey of unexpected challenges, disappointments, financial pressures, and plans that never quite came together.

And for many of us, it’s been a little bit of both.

But here’s something worth remembering: The year isn’t over yet.

We still have time to make meaningful decisions, strengthen relationships, complete important responsibilities, and prepare ourselves for the opportunities ahead.

1. Look Back Before You Move Forward

Before rushing to create another list of goals, take some time to reflect on the year you’ve already lived.

Think back to January. What were your hopes? What did you set out to accomplish? What changed along the way?

Maybe you started a business, changed careers, repaired a relationship, improved your health, learned a new skill, or finally took a chance on something you’d been putting off.

Perhaps your greatest accomplishment wasn’t something the world could see. Maybe it was finding the courage to begin again, learning to set boundaries, surviving a difficult season, or simply refusing to give up. Those victories count, too.

Don’t allow unfinished goals to overshadow everything you’ve accomplished. Give yourself credit for your progress, even when it looks different from what you originally imagined.

Be willing to acknowledge what didn’t work; sometimes the most valuable lessons come from the plans that fell apart.

2. Decide What Still Deserves Your Attention

Not every unfinished goal needs to follow you into the new year, some things are still worth pursuing, others may need to be adjusted, postponed, or released altogether.

Look at the commitments, projects, responsibilities, and relationships currently competing for your attention.

What absolutely needs to be completed before December 31? What can realistically wait? And what have you been holding on to simply because you once said you would do it?

The final quarter is an opportunity to become more intentional with your time.

Instead of trying to accomplish everything, identify two or three priorities that would make the greatest difference in how you finish the year.

Maybe it’s getting your finances organized, completing a business project, addressing something you’ve been avoiding, or spending more quality time with family.

Choose what matters most, create a realistic plan, and begin.

Proverbs 3:5 reminds us to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

We may not understand every delay or disappointment, but we can choose to believe our current circumstances don’t determine the rest of our story.

3. Close Out the Year with Your House in Order

As the year comes to a close, practical matters deserve our attention.

Review your finances, review your spending, savings, outstanding obligations, and upcoming expenses. If you own a business, review your records, client commitments, invoices, and progress toward your goals. Make time to discuss tax planning and year-end responsibilities with the appropriate professionals.

Organize important documents, review appointments, complete necessary maintenance, and address the little tasks that have been waiting for your attention.

But don’t stop with paperwork and finances; consider your emotional and personal well-being, too.

Are there conversations you’ve been avoiding? Relationships that need attention? Commitments that are draining you? Habits that are preventing you from moving forward?

Getting your house in order means more than organizing what you own. Sometimes it means making peace with what you’ve experienced and deciding what you’re no longer willing to carry.

4. Make Room for the People Who Matter

As we enter the holiday season, our calendars will begin filling with gatherings, celebrations, shopping, travel, and responsibilities. Amid all that activity, remember the people who made this year meaningful.

Who encouraged you when things were difficult? Who celebrated your victories? Who stood beside you when life became overwhelming? Have you thanked them?

And what about the people you’ve been meaning to call, visit, or spend time with? The final quarter offers a beautiful opportunity to reconnect.

Plan a family dinner, invite friends over, organize a holiday gathering, or simply make time for a meaningful conversation. You don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving or Christmas to show appreciation. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can give someone is our time and attention.

If you’re hosting a gathering, remember that you deserve to enjoy the celebration, too. A little planning and the right support can make a meaningful difference.

Take each day as it comes. Be patient with yourself. Appreciate the progress you’ve already made, even when it feels small.

5. Start Preparing for 2027 Before It Arrives

There’s something exciting about the beginning of a new year. It represents possibility, fresh opportunities, and another chance to pursue what matters.

But you don’t have to wait until January 1 to begin preparing.

Use these remaining months to think about the life you’re working toward.

What would you like to accomplish in 2027? What needs to change? What habits would you like to develop? What skills, resources, or relationships will help you get there?

If you’re building a business, start thinking about your strategy, budget, services, marketing, and growth opportunities.

If your focus is personal, consider your health, finances, family, faith, and overall well-being. Remember that preparation doesn’t mean you have to figure everything out today.

It simply means giving yourself a thoughtful head start.

6. Finish Strong, but Don't Forget to Enjoy the Journey

There’s a lot of pressure surrounding the phrase “finish strong.”

We hear it in business, sports, motivational speeches, and almost every conversation about the final quarter.

But finishing strong doesn’t always mean working harder, doing more, or pushing yourself to exhaustion.

Sometimes it means finally establishing a healthy boundary. Paying off a bill. Completing one important task. Making peace with a disappointment. Spending an afternoon with someone you love. Or giving yourself permission to rest. A strong finish reflects what truly matters to you.

Don’t spend these last months so focused on everything you haven’t accomplished that you overlook the life happening right in front of you.

Celebrate your progress. Learn from your setbacks. Appreciate the people around you. And remain hopeful about what’s ahead.

The Final Countdown Begins Now

We cannot go back and rewrite the first nine months of 2026, but we can make thoughtful decisions about the months that remain.

Perhaps this year has exceeded your expectations. Perhaps it has challenged you in ways you never imagined. Either way, you’ve made it this far, and that is worth acknowledging. So take a moment to reflect.

Be grateful for what went well. Learn from what didn’t. Finish what matters, release what doesn’t, and begin making room for a new chapter.

You still have time to make the final quarter meaningful.

When December 31 arrives, may you be able to look back and say:

I didn’t accomplish everything I planned, but I grew, I learned, I made progress, and I finished with intention.

Here's to a meaningful finish to 2026 and a promising beginning to 2027.
